TORONTO - A new award for children's authors worth more than $60,000 was announced on Thursday.

Sponsored by the Canadian Children's Book Centre and TD Bank, it is believed to be the richest children's literature prize in Canada. It will be awarded for the first time next fall.

A panel of judges drawn from the ranks of educators, reviewers, booksellers and librarians will pick a winning book in English and French. Each author will receive $20,000.

The publisher of the winning title will get $2,500 to promote the book.

Another $20,000 will go toward honouring the work of other English and French children's authors.

Dubbed the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award, it will be handed out annually as part of a week to promote children's books.
