TORONTO - Toronto has appointed Pier Giorgio Di Cicco as the city's new poet laureate.

Born in Arezzo, Italy, Di Cicco takes over from Dennis Lee, who was appointed Toronto's first poet laureate in 2001.

Di Cicco will serve three years in the post, which requires him to be the literary ambassador for Canada's largest city.
