Tangled

Dark surrounds the fog
over Vancouver Island
in the night
pushing wet light
into puddles under streetlamps.

In the fog the sky impenetrable
and infinite in possibility,
world bathed in the yellow
of lamps loved by the mist.

Light loves the fog with soft fire,
paws it from porches
and pathways and open doors;
the two rolling together, wrapped in each other,
a blanket of mixed elements.

Until dark,
jealous, cuts the damp,
breaks the shimmer
into tiny circles left to huddle
tightly
around electric coils
and candle flames.

Anita Dolman is an Ottawa-based freelance writer and editor, and the
managing editor of Poetics.ca. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in
various North American journals, broadsides and magazines, including
The Fiddlehead, The Peter F. Yacht Club, Utne, Grain, Geist and Prism
