a decade ago in an ice cream parlour between the Lieutenant's Pump & Videoholics on Elgin street
(Lois 'n' Frima's) there was a reading series called
"THE VANILLA READING SERIES". This series had an open mic format (without the mic) & featured some of Ottawa's then emerging raw talent. Names like rob mclennan, Jeffrey Mackie, Colin Morton, David Collins, Robert Craig, Vicky Vernell, Marty Flomen, James Spyker, Nadine Lee Miller, Pamela Chynn, Tamara Fairchild, S.R. Morrison, Rocco Paoletti, Patrick Kelly, Sylvie M.S. Hill, Robin Hannah, Kathryn Payne, David Scrimshaw, Jayne Holowachuk, Graham M. Fallis, Nick Tytor, Steve Dale,Louise Archibald, Gene Villneuve, Grant Wilkins,(those from MPD, & the bearded poets) and a few others who shared their enthusiasm for words (mostly poetry) in the cold of fall/winter (& Ottawa's chilling spring) inside the ice cream parlour, & out on the street in the summer months in the Byward Market.

The young series not only promoted the poets but the poetic community as well, thru ongoing cross promotion of other series like TREE, BARD, ORION, ARC & various magazines: The carleton Arts Review, the skinny, stanzas, bywords, Hostbox, Hook 'n' Ladder, & others.
